BREAKING BARRIERS: THE INSPIRING STORY OF UMMU KHULSUM, YOBE’S FIRST-CLASS MATHEMATICIAN
Talent, Brilliance, and the Power of Girl Child Education
Meeting a First Class Female Mathematics Graduate This morning began like an ordinary Monday at the office—emails stacked high and a demanding to-do list waiting. But instead of the usual routine, the Executive Secretary was welcomed by staff members who were accompanied by a young lady. Although not in the mood for visitors, courtesy required a simple question: “Who is she?”
“She’s our new NYSC corps member,” the staff responded. “Though she has some deployment issues.”
A few minutes into the conversation, curiosity led to another question: “So, what did you study?”
“Mathematics, sir,” she replied.
With the usual confidence shaped by long-held assumptions, he smiled lightly and asked, “Oh really? Second Class Lower or…?”
Her calm and humble answer instantly transformed his morning.
“Sir, First Class.”
That moment shifted the atmosphere. He adjusted his seat, took a closer look, and asked, “First Class in Mathematics?”
She nodded. “Yes sir, from Yobe State University.”
Her name is Ummu Khulsum Nasir Muhammad, from Bade LGA. She completed her secondary education in Damaturu and Gashua, and proudly graduated with a First Class in Mathematics from Yobe State University. To add more brilliance, she confidently stated, “Sir, I also have skills in Python, Data Visualization, Excel, and I’m exploring AI.”
The Executive Secretary was deeply impressed. Immediately, he instructed his team to provide her with a workspace in the Data Room along with a clearly defined task. Later, he contacted Prof. Madaki, who confirmed that she is the second female First Class graduate in Mathematics from YSU.
As someone who has always admired Mathematics—though without achieving a First Class himself—he admitted that his long-standing “men-only-maths” perception was respectfully corrected that day. Ummu Khulsum’s brilliance stands as undeniable proof that investing in the education of the girl child is truly an investment in the future.
Determined not to let such talent go unnoticed, he expressed readiness to reach out to Dr. Kagu and others within his network to ensure that this shining star from Bade receives the opportunities she rightly deserves.
Yobe is proud of you, Ummu Khulsum.
