YOBE STATE GOVERNMENT KICKS OFF WORKSHOP IN PREPARATION FOR THE COMMENCEMENT OF WORLD BANK FUNDED SOLID PROJECT, FOCUSING ON IDP POLICY DOMESTICATION

 

In a significant move aimed at tackling the challenges of internal displacement, the Yobe State government has embarked on a groundbreaking workshop for the Domestication of National Policy on Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). This initiative marks a pivotal moment for Yobe State, positioning it as the first state in Nigeria to take such a strategic step towards addressing the complex issues surrounding protracted displacement.

 

While declaring the workshop open, His Excellency the Executive of Yobe State, Hon Mai Mala Buni CON, represented by the Secretary to the Yobe State Government Alhaji Baba mallam Wali Mni emphasized the state’s commitment to responding to the UN Secretary General’s Action Agenda on Solutions to Internal Displacement. He further said over the past years, Yobe State has made substantial progress in reconstruction, rehabilitation, and the establishment of new infrastructure to improve various aspects of life for both returnees and host communities.

 

The representative of the governor equally acknowledges the collaborative efforts of donors and development partners, including Federal Government agencies, The World Bank, UN agencies, and other partners, and expressed gratitude for their support in filling developmental gaps and complementing state initiatives to meet the needs of affected communities.

 

In his welcome remark, the executive secretary of Yobe State Emergency management Agency Dr Mohammed Goje highlighted the importance of partnerships with security agencies, international organizations, and other stakeholders in alleviating the suffering of IDPs and rebuilding communities. He further said Strengthening security measures, infrastructural development, social services, and livelihood support are integral components of Yobe State’s approach to achieving Durable Solutions.

 

Yobe State SOLID Project coordinator Suleiman Dauda, made a presentation on the workshop objectives and reiterated the commitment SOLID project to providing durable solutions for IDPs through coordinated partnerships and institutionalized implementation through state MDAs and jointly with other partners in the state.

 

Various partners and government representatives spoke passionately about their commitment to partnership and support to Yobe State Government towards addressing protracted displacement in the state.

 

The five-day workshop will feature capacity building session and domestication of National Policy on Internally Displaced Persons to the specific socio-cultural, economic, and environmental context of Yobe State and its aspiration to Internal Displacement’s call for next generation solutions.

 

The meeting has in attendance the Hon member and chairman Yobe State House of Assembly Committee and Humanitarian and Disaster Management, Hon Lawan Sani Inuwa Nguru, State Security Adviser to Yobe State Governor, representative of World Bank, UNDP, IOM, UNHCR, UNOCHA, CSOs, traditional leaders, IDPs, host communities. Also present at the workshop are representatives of various MDAs and security agencies including military, police, state service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corp, and Correctional Service.
