YOBE STATE GOVERNMENT HELD MDA ENGAGEMENT ON DURABLE SOLUTION FOR IDPs

On Thursday 26th October 2023, Yobe State Government through the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) in collaboration with UNDP convened a high-level Stakeholder entry meeting on DURABLE SOLUTION for IDPs.

The key objectives of the meeting are;

1. To foster a better understanding of the concept of durable solutions for IDPs among stakeholders;
2. To stimulate discussion among key MDAs toward the development of Stakeholder inclusive State Action Plan.

In his opening remark, the executive secretary of SEMA Dr Goje Mohammed explained that Yobe State Government under the leadership His Excellency the Executive Hon Mai Mala Buni (CON) is ever committed to finding a lasting solution for protracted displacement in the state through the UN Secretary General Agenda on Durable Solution for IDPs.

The meeting featured a technical presentation by a SEMA consultant who explained the concept of Durable Solution for IDPs as a process when IDPs no longer have specific assistance and protection needs that are linked to their displacement and such persons can enjoy their human rights without discrimination resulting from their displacement.

The consultant further explained the three processes in which a durable solution can be achieved through;
Sustainable reintegration at the place of origin (hereinafter referred to as “return”);
Sustainable local integration in areas where internally displaced persons take refuge (local integration); and
Sustainable integration in another part of the country (settlement elsewhere in the country).

On his part, the head of UNDP Northeast Dr Morcef took time and explained to the stakeholders the State Action Development Process. He equally applauded the Yobe State Government for proactive commitment in driving this significant agenda, and reemphasized the need for sustained Political leadership to achieve Durable Solution in an Integrated approach involving all stakeholders. He said Yobe has all it takes to lead in developing a model for durable solution.

The meeting also featured interactive session with stakeholders from various MDAs on the proposed Action Plan for the state.
