SEMA Visits Karasuwa, Yusufari, Machina, and Nguru LGAs

The Yobe State government delegation, through the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), visited Karasuwa, Yusufari, Machina, and Nguru LGAs to commiserate with victims of the recent flood disaster. The delegation conducted a rapid spot assessment and validated findings previously reported by the Local Emergency Management Committees (LEMC) for immediate response, as directed by His Excellency, Governor Mai Mala Buni, CON.
During the visit, Dr. Mohammed Goje, accompanied by LGA stakeholders and representatives of the affected communities, emphasized the Governor’s directives to support victims as swiftly as possible.
In line with emergency best practices, the immediate needs of victims include:
Protection from the adverse effects of the disaster, especially for those in transit camps, by providing non-food items (NFIs) to prevent malaria and other communicable diseases.
Ensuring those in camps are supported with immediate food supplies while assessments continue to determine other needs.
Facilitating the integration of victims into host communities or government facilities and resettlement areas.
Advocating for resources to clear waterways through relevant MDAs and planning for long-term solutions for areas with a history of recurring flooding and blockages.
Conducting in-depth assessments for victims whose shelters and livelihoods have been destroyed.
To date, over 5,000 households, comprising more than 18,000 individuals across 208 communities in 16 LGAs, have been documented as affected by floods, windstorms, and related disasters since April 2024.
Dr. Mohammed Goje reaffirmed the Yobe State Government’s commitment to closing the gaps and ensuring victims are protected and supported within available resources. Validation is ongoing, and immediate needs and support will be delivered as directed by His Excellency.
