SEMA/UNICEF MOBILIZES SUPPORT TO POTISKUM FLOOD VICTIMS

SEMA/UNICEF Mobilizes Hygiene Support, Shelter Relief to Potiskum Flood Victims

In the wake of the recent floods that affected several communities in Potiskum, Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), in collaboration with Water Supply and Sanitation Initiative (WASSI) and with funding from UNICEF, has reached 150HH of Afghanistan, Makarahuta and Filin Nashe communities with hygiene kits.

This follows a comprehensive house-to-house hygiene promotion campaign led by WASSI, ensuring that affected families are equipped with the knowledge and tools to stay healthy during this challenging time.

At the distribution, the ES SEMA Dr Goje Mohammed commended all partners for aligning with the government’s ongoing efforts to cushion the impact of the disaster.

Beyond hygiene support, the Yobe State Government has been actively responding across multiple fronts:

1. Cash Support for Rent: Displaced families in other flood-affected communities have received financial assistance to secure temporary shelter and regain stability.

2. Distribution of Non-Food Items (NFIs): Essential items such as mats, blankets, mosquito nets, buckets, kettles, washing soap etc have been provided to help restore dignity and comfort to those who lost their belongings.

3. Shelter kits which include Bundles of Zinc, Cement, roofing nails etc with support from ACF

4. Dignity kits

This multi-pronged response reflects the government’s commitment to protecting lives, restoring hope, and building resilience in the face of flood. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all partners and stakeholders working tirelessly to support our communities.

Sadly, 2 people were reported dead, an elderly woman as a result of a building collapse while a 10-year-old female who drowned in flood waters, and she was later found dead. SEMA team in collaboration with local divers, Fire Service and the Red Cross led the rescue team.
