SEMA Executive Secretary Chairs Humanitarian Coordination Meeting

The Executive Secretary of Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Dr. MOHAMMAD GOJE FRSPH recently presided over the monthly meeting of the Humanitarian Coordination Forum. This crucial gathering brought together partners from the United Nations (UN), international governmental organizations (IGOs), and civil society organizations (CSOs). Both physical and virtual attendees convened to review ongoing humanitarian activities, address gaps, and strategize for the future.

As of July 2024, Yobe State faces significant challenges due to flooding. Participants discussed the current response efforts and assessed the situation on the ground. The need for coordinated action to mitigate the impact of floods was emphasized.

The meeting delved into Humanitarian Response Planning (HRP) for Yobe State. Stakeholders explored ways to enhance preparedness, streamline resources, and ensure effective coordination among agencies. The goal is to provide timely assistance to affected communities.

In addition to the forum, the Executive Secretary engaged in bilateral discussions with key partners:

Save the Children International (SCI): Representatives from SCI, including those from the Abuja and Maiduguri Zonal offices, met with the Executive Secretary. The focus was on progress updates and localization policies. These discussions aim to strengthen collaboration and align priorities with the state government’s vision.
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR): Mr. Nicolas Kaburaburyo, Head of the Maiduguri UNHCR Sub Office, visited Yobe State. The meeting centered on durable solutions, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and alignment with Yobe’s action plan. Communication strategies were also explored to prevent duplication and ensure efficient implementation.

Action points arising from these meetings have been meticulously documented, with responsible individuals assigned to follow up. A dashboard tracking flood-related initiatives will facilitate transparent reporting and accountability.

As Yobe State continues to grapple with humanitarian challenges, SEMA remains committed to fostering collaboration and resilience.
