Promise Made, Promise Kept: Yobe Spelling Bee Volunteer Teacher Receives Permanent Appointment

In a significant move to honor and recognize the dedication of volunteer teachers, Governor Mai Mala Buni has fulfilled his promise by awarding a permanent and pensionable appointment to Malama Fatima Abdullahi Jibrin, a volunteer teacher who coached the 1st Runner-Up in the 2nd Yosema Spelling Bee Competition.
On August 6th, 2024, in a brief but momentous ceremony, the Secretary/Acting Chair of Yobe SUBEB and the Executive Secretary of SEMA, alongside other staff and the LOC team of the Spelling Bee Competition, presented the appointment letter to Malama Fatima Abdullahi Jibrin on behalf of the Yobe State Government.
In addition to the appointment, His Excellency Governor Mai Mala Buni CON generously awarded cash donations of 500,000 Naira each to the teachers who coached the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners of the competition. This gesture underscores the Governor’s commitment to supporting and rewarding educational excellence.
Malama Fatima Abdullahi Jibrin expressed her overwhelming gratitude, stating, “I am short of words. Everything is happening so fast and unexpectedly.” She recounted how she was mocked for volunteering to support her candidate at the competition, but now feels vindicated and thankful for the opportunity. She extended her gratitude to Allah and Governor Buni, promising to continue contributing to her school.
In a touching act of generosity, Malama Fatima donated 200,000 Naira of her award to the school that allowed her to serve as a volunteer, now her permanent place of employment.
In his remarks, the Secretary/Acting Chair of SUBEB highlighted Governor Buni’s directive to develop plans for improving the working conditions of all teachers and to explore ways to absorb more committed and dedicated volunteer teachers into permanent roles.
This event marks a significant milestone in Yobe State’s educational journey, reflecting the government’s dedication to fostering a supportive and rewarding environment for educators. The 2nd Yosema Spelling Bee Competition not only showcased the linguistic talents of young students but also highlighted the invaluable contributions of their mentors.
