GOV. BUNI LAUNCHES N2.9 BILLION SUPPORT FOR FLOOD VICTIMS…

Yobe State Governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni CON, has launched the disbursement of N2.9 billion in support to flood victims, vulnerable persons, and small business owners across the state. This initiative aims to empower citizens, rekindle hope, and strengthen resilience in response to the devastating 2024 flood disaster.

The state government is providing financial support to 25,500 flood victims and vulnerable persons, each receiving N50,000, and 15,000 small business owners, each receiving N100,000. Governor Buni highlighted that the unprecedented floods this year displaced 441 communities across the 17 local government areas, affecting over 20,000 households and resulting in 34 deaths.

Governor Buni noted that the floods had severely impacted infrastructure, including the Damaturu to Bayamari federal highway, which was cut off in four locations: Kariyari, Jumbam, Koromari, and Bayamari. Additionally, the Damaturu to Buni federal road was washed away between Katarko and Gujba town, the Potiskum to Garin Alkali road was cut off at Tarajim, and the Gaidam to Bukarti road was washed away at Mozagun.

The state government promptly repaired the washed-away roads to restore the movement of people, goods, and services. Similar interventions were carried out on the Gadaka to Godowoli and Dogon Kuka to Daura roads. Public structures, personal houses, farmlands, and livestock were also destroyed by the floods.

Governor Buni emphasized that, with support from the federal government and development partners, the state had earlier distributed food, non-food items, and ₦100 million in emergency funds to victims in the most affected local government areas. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to the Renewed Hope Initiative, pledging continued support for women, people with disabilities, the elderly, and other vulnerable persons.

The Governor assured that the government would continue to provide free education, accessible and affordable healthcare, technological advancement, and economic incentives to empower less privileged persons for economic growth.
